What Do Christians Believe?

GOD THE FATHER

“In the beginning . . . God created the world,” and all that is in it . . . “and God saw that it was good”. Men and women were given freewill to choose between good and evil . . . true love can only come from a choice freely made.

THE FALL

The loving relationship with God and with each other was broken when they gave way to selfish desire and rejected  God’s way for them.

THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS

God continued to love his people.  Through Moses he gave them Ten Commandments.  Many times by the voices of the Prophets he called them to amend their ways but they refused or fell back again.

THE VIRGIN MARY

Finally God sent his Son into the world born of Mary.  Despite her fears she responded in obedient love to what God asked of her.

At the same time John the Baptist was preparing for his task of calling people to repent and to be ready for the coming of a Saviour.

GOD THE SON

Jesus:  The name means ‘Saviour’

Christ: A title meaning ‘The Anointed One’ or ‘The Chosen One’ – True God and True Man – was conceived miraculously by God’s Spirit.  His mother Mary and Joseph had to return to Bethlehem for a census and he was born there in a humble stable.

By his teaching and example he showed people how to live a godly life.  Even to accepting death by crucifixion at the hands of his persecutors.  His perfect life of obedience to the will of God culminated in his mighty resurrection from the dead and glorious ascension into heaven where he now reigns for ever with God the Father.  It is because their Lord died on the cross that the symbol of the cross is used as a reminder of the Christian Faith.

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT

The loving and strengthening Spirit of God who comes into our hearts is often depicted by the symbol of a dove as a sign of peace and purity.

THE CHURCH

The Church is the body of people who believe in the Christian Faith.  It also refers to the building in which they meet together to worship God, to listen to his Word and to receive the Sacraments.

THE SCRIPTURES

The Bible is really a library containing different kinds of books with the common theme of God’s dealing with his people.

The Old Testament records times before the birth of Christ and the New Testament those afterwards.

SACRAMENTS

Christians communicate with God regularly by talking and listening to him in Prayer.  Sacraments are a very special way by which God conveys his personal help (called grace) for a particular purpose by a visible sign.  The Christian Faith is entered by Baptism.

Draw nigh and take the Body of the Lord And drink by faith the Blood for you outpoured

LIFE EVERLASTING

It is our hope and belief that after serving God here on earth the faithful will remain enfolded in his love and at the final judgement, will be raised to be with Christ and enjoy God’s presence eternally in heaven.
