The design for the enclosure of the Monastery was taken from the model on display in the North Down Museum and appliquéd on a painted background. The words ‘Draw nigh and take the Body of the Lord’ are from the Bangor Antiphonary.
Many of the designs are interpretations from Canon James Hamilton’s book originally written in 1958 to commemorate the 1400th Anniversary of the Abbey’s foundation. The fourth edition of the book, entitled ‘Bangor Abbey through Fifteen Centuries, was published in 2006 to mark the 20th Anniversary of ‘The Friends of Bangor Abbey’.
This work is also an example of embroidery and appliqué, each block related to the history of the period.
