Bangor Abbey
has a historic and fascinating
graveyard. It is a social, economic
and political history of this part of Ireland over at least 300 years.
There are memorials to custom men and pirates, ambassadors and factory
owners, clergy and crooks! The inscriptions testifying the deaths
of whole families in the nineteenth century are moving indeed. A
team of volunteers led by Harry Ellison are currently working on making
it more accessible for visitors and improving the look of the grounds.
The
Friends of Bangor Abbey are sponsoring the clean-up and pathways with
the assistance (we hope!) of the tourist board.
